Black Girl Magic Is the Theme of This Debut Play

Denver local Marie Thomas is set to debut her first original play, The Noir Door, at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance on Friday, April 15. Captured in six short vignettes, The Noir Door gives the audience a glance into a world of mysticism, surrealism and magical realism with Black culture commentary through the eyes of the young Black women.

Thomas, a graduate from Spelman College, moved back to her hometown of Denver in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in comparative women’s studies. After two years of working at various nonprofit jobs, Thomas landed a role that aligned perfectly with her values. She would spend the next year working at Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, a nonprofit advocating for Black and brown girls to be smart, strong and bold through mentorships. That mission ended up…
