Northern Colorado Hailstorm F.C. could not have made a better first impression on the U.S. soccer landscape.
The Hailstorm pulled off a “cup-set” in the club’s first-ever competitive match, beating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Down to 10 men for more than an hour, Hailstorm FC held on at 0-0 to force extra time in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against their Centennial State rivals.
Hailstorm never panicked. Instead it flipped the script. A giant killing in the truest sense.
In the 106th minute, substitute Lachlan McLean received a pass deep in the box and did enough to hold off two Switchback defenders. He found a cutting Jerry Desudens who scored what would be the match’s only goal.
